2008 SUMMER PROGRAMME

MAY
Saturday 3rd 2pm SPRING FLOWERS at Foxholes BBOWT Reserve,
Bruern Abbey. There is a small car park near the reserve (SP259 209)
which is reached by a farm track from a minor road at SP260 202, just west
of Bruern Abbey. Leader: Ray Edwards 01865 881169. BOG

Sunday 11th 4.00am DAWN CHORUS near Eastleach, Glos. From the
A40 west of Burford take the minor road to Westwell. Continue straight
through the village for about 5 miles to meet at Sheep Bridge over the River
Leach (SP192 070). Leader: Graham Wren 01600 890488. O

Saturday 17th 2pm SEVEN BARROWS, a BBOWT Reserve and SSSI in
the Lambourn Downs (SU329 828). 5 1/2 miles SW of Wantage and 2 1/2
miles N of Lambourn on a minor road leading from the B4001 to Kingston
Lisle. Chalk grassland flowers and rare butterflies including Marsh Fritillary and Duke of Burgundy.

JUNE
Tuesday 3rd June 7.30pm TADPOLE BRIDGE for a Thames-side walk.
Meet at the Trout PH (SP335 004) on the Bampton to Buckland unclassified
road. Leader: Tony Florey 01993 775020.

Sunday 8th 2.30pm OXFORD CANAL/SHIPTON QUARRY. Meet at
the Rock of Gibraltar PH (SP479 183) on the A4095. Lunch is available.
A canalside walk with views over the old limestone quarry (now out of
bounds) which following disuse has developed into a wildlife haven.

Saturday 31st 10.30am and 2.00pm. The morning venue is HIGHNAM
WOODS on the A40 about 4 miles west of Gloucester, access at SO778
190. Lunch is available at the Travellers’ Rest, Malswick (SO739 250) on
the B4215 SE of Newent. In the afternoon we visit the NEWENT BIRDS
OF PREY CENTRE at Clifford’s Mesne (SO705 240) on a minor road
about 2 miles SW of NEWENT (Entrance £8.50/£7 concessions).

Sunday 15th 6.30pm THATCHAM MOOR (SU506 668) and BUCKLEBURY
COMMON (SU558 494) near Newbury. A joint expedition with
the Oxford RSPB group. Meet at Thatcham Moor to the south of the village
which straddles the A4. Towards dusk we will proceed to Bucklebury

Tuesday 17th 6.30pm BROADWELL AIRFIELD (SP249 069). This
disused WW2 airfield has now developed an interesting flora including Bee
and other orchids. Meet on a minor road from the A361 south of Burford
leading to Kencot where it crosses an old runway.

Saturday 28th 2pm CHIMNEY MEADOWS. Meet at the BBOWT Car
Park (SP354 013). These Thames-side wet meadows adjoining a NNR are
rich in plant, insect and bird life and can be found by following signs from
Aston (Bull Lane) or Cote, otherwise from Bampton to Buckland road.

JULY
Sunday 13th 2.30pm WENDLEBURY MEADS near Charlton-on-
Otmoor. Meet at the crossroads north of the village (SP560 163) on the
minor road between Islip and Ambroseden. These are flower-rich meadows
in the River Ray catchment and to the west of Otmoor. About 2 1/4 miles

Saturday 19th 2.30pm CRICKLEY HILL south of Cheltenham. Meet at
the Country park entrance on the B4070 (SO936 163). Lunch is available
nearby at the Air Balloon PH situated by the A417/A436/B4070 roundabout.
This promises to be another stimulating plant search led by Mornee
Button 01451 821105. BGT

Sunday 27th 2.30pm DANCERS END, a BBOWT reserve tucked away
in the Chilterns near Tring. Take the unclassified road running SE from the
B4009 (A404) near its junction with the old A41, after about 1 1/4 miles
meet in the car park (SP401 095). The habitat is a mosaic of chalk grassland
scrub and new woodland with some old woodland plant species.
Lunch is available at the Crow’s Nest Motel on the A41 (old road)

A trip to the DISS area on the borders of Suffolk and Norfolk is being
planned for late July..


AUGUST
Sunday 3rd 10am FARINGDON area, an all day event. Meet at the NT
Badbury Hill car park (SU262 946) on the B4019 Faringdon to Highworth
road. Later we will visit the Barn at Great Coxwell before going to the
Swan PH for lunch. At 2.30pm we will gather at Faringdon Folly (SU297
967) which is holding an Open Day. After climbing 300 steps there is an
enjoyable panorama of the upper Thames Valley and adjoining areas.

Sunday 17th 6 for 6.30pm SUMMER PARTY at the Swan PH at Radcot
Bridge. (Cost yet to be finalised)

Tuesday 12th 6.30pm ASHAM MEADS BBOWT Reserve. Meet at the
reserve (SP590 142). This small reserve is tucked away on the fringe of
Otmoor and has damp meadows with typical flora and fauna including
hairstreak butterflies and Emperor dragonflies.

SEPTEMBER
Saturday 6th 2pm NORTHLEACH. Meet in the Square (SP113 146) for
a circular walk to Hampnet. Leader: Ken Betteridge 01993 878615 G

Sunday 14th 2pm COLN ST ALDWYNS and BIBURY. Meet at the
New Inn, Coln St Aldwyns (SP146 051). Lunch is available. About 4

Thursday 18th 6.30pm BAT WALK at SHERBORNE. Meet at the
National Trust estate office (SP172 147). Driving west on the A40 turn
right to Sherborne and first left in the village, the office is about 3/4 mile
on the left opposite the cemetery. There will be an introductory talk before

OCTOBER
Friday 3rd First indoor meeting A speaker is currently being arranged

A fungus foray is being planned for later in the month. Details at first
indoor meeting.

Friday 15th—Sunday 17th Bird Fair at Rutland Water.
