A dawn chorus with a difference

Maggie Collins writes:

What a hullabaloo this morning at 5.30 am in suburban Witney! It sounded like crows so I got up, reluctantly, to see what it was all about.  Hundreds (or so it seemed) of crows were flying around the houses in quite a state making a great racket on our normally quiet street – jackdaws and carrion crows as far as I could tell, once I got my binoculars out.

Something made me look down and to my amazement I saw a fox trotting along with a large crow in its mouth.  No wonder the crows were upset.  The fox stepped into my neighbour’s wild and shady garden, no doubt to hide from the screaming and swooping birds above.  The show moved on down the street and eventually all was quiet again.  I haven’t seen a fox on our street since new houses were built a few years ago so it was good to see they are still about, even if the crows weren’t so happy.

JC adds: Maggie didn’t have a photo of the ‘show’ so the picture is taken from a video I digiscoped at Standlake about a year ago.
