John C writes: Even though it’s spring, it hasn’t felt like it for the last couple of days and we spent another damp Sunday afternoon at Pit 60, which, as usual, was not without its rewards.
There were several of families of ducks and greylag geese. A marsh harrier flew in and, for a while, seemed to have its eye on the ducklings, but left them alone, at least while we were there.

While we were watching the marsh harrier, two hobbies made a brief appearance. A pair of oystercatchers were flying around and piping. We were surprised to see, as well as swallows and martins, three swifts flying over the water – which seems quite early for their return.
A common tern showed up shortly before we left and, after a short sharp shower, the sun came out and blackcaps were singing loudly everywhere. Sue recorded one on our way back to the car; other birds were also singing (with an RAF Atlas in the background).
Who can fail to be cheered by ducklings? Sure signs of spring!
