After all the gloom of the past few weeks, not to mention wind and rain, we struck lucky for our walk around Blenheim. The day started sunny and remained dry and pleasant throughout our walk. This was very a different day from our visit to Bury Down on 10th December last year when we experienced driving rain and a Force 8 gale!
Ten of us met at the Green Gate and walked around to the right of Queen Pool, stopping to view Gadwall, masses of Mallards, Greylag Geese, Great Crested Grebes and a couple of Herons, posing like statues. A welcome find was a pair of Little Grebes, which were staying close to the rushes but within easy viewing distance.
Crossing the Grand Bridge we noted lots of Tufted Ducks and a possible Wigeon as well as Great White Egret on the far bank. Cormorants and coots were spotted too, although not in their usual numbers.
A chilly wind drove us to the Cafe in search of warmth and sustenance. Once revived, we returned to cross back over the Grand Bridge, then left along the shore of Great Lake. There were plenty more mallard, but no other birds of particular note.
At this point we dispersed, some to catch the bus, others to the car park and one to walk home. It was a pleasant December morning’s stroll with enough birds to satisfy us and also good company.
