Nine members joined Dr Anne Miller for a three-hour walk around the perimeter of the Southhill solar farm. Anne gave us an introduction to the history of this community solar farm, which produces enough electricity to supply Finstock, Fawler and the town of Charlbury. Shares were sold to local people and the West Oxfordshire District Council. They have proved to be a wise investment.
Much of the land around the solar farm is designed with nature in mind so there are wildflower meadows, a rough area, a laid elm hedge, a winter pond, and a heritage apple orchard. There were many wild flowers to be seen despite the recent dry weather and a good number of birds seen or heard. Some of the highlights included seeing a Greater butterfly-orchid and a good number of butterflies (small heath, small blue, small white, painted lady). Banded demoiselles were spotted near the river and many mayflies (3 tails) – some discussion whether they were stoneflies (2 tails). The weather was perfect – not too hot or chilly. Many volunteers work there, and more are always welcome. Many thanks to Anne for leading us, and to Brenda for compiling the species list, which can be found here
