WWT Slimbridge

25th January, 2026

As now seems to be routine, the ten Field Club members who came along to Slimbridge were prepared for horribly wet weather, clad in every conceivable waterproof. As it turned out the predicted rain stayed away, allowing us to enjoy lots of birdwatching in quite mild, dry conditions. What luck!

On arrival, we noticed a bunch of photographers focusing in on a pair of silver birches in which several Redpolls were busy enjoying the catkins. A good start.

Visiting the various hides allowed wonderful views of a huge variety of birds, with Lapwing, Cranes, Teal, and Geese in abundance, and a flock of Golden Plover wheeling around. We spotted quite a few Ruffs, and even one with a white head that looked as if it was changing into its breeding plumage. Reasonably calm conditions meant that the birds could feed peacefully with little disturbance, giving us a great opportunity to focus in on individuals.

A highlight for several of us was being able to get up close to a Water Rail.  The diminutive little wader, was busy feeding in the grasses very close to where we stood, apparently unperturbed by our presence.

A good lunch in the warm Cafe was welcome before further bird-watching in the afternoon.

WWT seem to be phasing out the captive birds in enclosures that used to be a feature. There are still some, allowing close views of less common species such as Smew, Eider and Garganey. And a giant owl made of lego! – Ed.
