Slow worms

I have a good population of slow worms in my garden and they particularly like to bask in the warmth of my badly maintained compost heap, under an old plastic mat that I use to keep the heat in.

This photograph was taken last year, but currently there are at least three tangled up together- difficult to count how many heads there are but, if I disturb them to add more waste to the heap, at least one will raise its head to show me a mouthful of tiny but sharp teeth.
