It’s a bit of a trek to BBOWT’s Warburg reserve, near Henley, but the group who made the journey for our annual fungus foray agreed that it was worth it, even if the weather hadn’t made it easy for us or the fungi.

We were wondering what effect this summer’s prolonged drought would have on fungi, even though there had been a fair bit of rain during early autumn. When Peter did his recce, there were plenty of fungi, but then the weather dried up again. This meant that we had to hunt quite hard to find our fungi – but find them we did. Warburg is a beautiful reserve and it was looking gorgeous in the autumn sunshine, with good autumn colour. Our route took us through varied habitats of grassland and woodland, and the list of species found can be found here.

I got the distinct feeling that there were lots and lots of fungi waiting to emerge as soon as the conditions were more favourable!

Many thanks as always to Peter for his leadership and expertise, and to Isobel for compiling the species list, with a couple of additions from Brenda.
