Moth Morning

28 June 2026

We had an early start to watch our moth expert, Julian Howe, open the moth traps that he had set up the previous evening in a lovely, wildlife-friendly garden in Shilton. What would we find?

Sadly there were no hawk moths this year, possibly due to the unusually hot weather, but there were plenty of others to admire. Here are some of the stars – my favourite is the Buff Tip above, so beautifully camouflaged to look like a broken twig.

Many thanks to Maggie and Julia for the refreshments, which we enjoyed after the moths had been admired and released, and to Veronica for allowing us to use her beautiful garden.

The list of moths seen can be found here.
