As Field Club walks go, this really was a cracker! We were so fortunate in having a warm but not too hot a day, particularly as the following
day reached 28 degrees. In addition, we had a really great leader in the form of Craig Blackwell who made our walk both informative and fun.

The visit to Long Mead Meadow at Swinford, near Eynsham, was arranged following a talk given to us by Catriona Bass in the autumn and presented a great opportunity to see what we had learned about for real.

The Wyre Forest, near Kidderminster in Worcestershire, is a hidden gem, little known outside the area but rich in wildlife. Luckily for us, the Club’s President, Peter Creed, knows it well and led us on a three day visit in late May/early June.

Bernwood Meadows was once part of the Royal Forest of Bernwood where Norman Kings hunted deer and wild boar. The forest stretched for many miles across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire in a patchwork for fields, woodland and ponds. BBOWT now manages five reserves within the area, Bernwood Meadows being one. The meadows are grazed at the appropriate times and volunteers cut back the edges and coppice trees to discourage encroaching scrub, allowing wild flowers to thrive throughout the summer months.

It’s quite a long drive to Salisbury Plain, but the draw of being able to see Great Bustards was enough for twelve members of the Field Club to make the journey.

Despite the cloudless skies, it was a chilly start to our recent woodland wander through this celebrated SSSI on Oxford’s doorstep. Blackcaps chorused as about 20 of us gathered in the car park, lead singers over a backing group of chaffinches and other woodland birds.

As now seems to be routine, the ten Field Club members who came along to Slimbridge were prepared for horribly wet weather, clad in every conceivable waterproof. As it turned out the predicted rain stayed away, allowing us to enjoy lots of birdwatching in quite mild, dry conditions. What luck!

A glow worm walk wasn’t on the programme, but as a couple of other walks had to be cancelled because the very hot, dry weather had affected the plant life, we scheduled a pop-up. Would any glow worms pop up? My recce wasn’t very promising.
WOFC Moth Morning 13th July 2025
Our annual Moth Morning took place one week later than in 2024. Add on the exceptionally dry and hot conditions that we have experienced this year and it was no great surprise that the variety of moths was a lot different from last year.

Charlbury Quarry has been closed to the public for over 20 years. After the closure of the working quarry following a tragic accident, it was planned as a wildlife area and left with minimal management.
